Making Tax Digital
Making Tax Digital (MTD) is HMRC’s move towards a fully digital tax system. It changes how self-employed individuals and landlords keep records and report income to HMRC and the previous annual tax returns with more regular on-line reporting submissions.
If you’re self employed or earn income from property, MTD will affect how you manage your finances and stay compliant. We can provide all the support you need and make life easier.
Our regular connection with you means that we reduce the risk of late filing and potential penalties.
Even if your business is not VAT registered, you will still need to comply with MTD and file quarterly for Income Tax purposes. The integration into MTD is happening in stages as follows:
- From 6 April 2026 – income from these businesses over £50,000
- From 6 April 2027 – income from these businesses over £30,000
Why Making Tax Digital matters
MTD isn’t just a software change, it’s a shift in how HMRC expects you to run your business finances.
Getting this wrong could lead to penalties, extra work or last-minute panic.
However, under the MTD reporting requirements, there is opportunity to be proactive.
- Keep digital records of your income and expenses
- Secure storage of data in the cloud
- Better financial understanding and clearer picture of your results and cashflow
- Submit updates to HMRC throughout the year rather than just the once – keeping your self-employment business or rental business up to date
- Compliance with tax rules and confidence that you’re meeting HMRC requirements
- Earlier awareness of tax liabilities
