An HMRC query is often an informal, specific, or minor question that check for errors – for instance, clarifying a single figure on your tax return that can be resolved quickly.
Generally, if you filed your tax return on time and made no changes to it, HMRC have 12 months from the date you filed the return in which to make amendments to any errors they see or to open a query.
If a query is not answered satisfactorily, it can escalate into a formal enquiry.
